In this short lesson, I’ll teach you some basic phrases so you can talk about yourself in Korean.
Let’s start with “Hello.”
In Korean, the polite and most common way is:
안녕하세요
annyeonghaseyo
→ Hello
제 이름은 ...이에요 / 예요.
je ireumeun ...ieyo / yeyo.
→ My name is …
If your name ends in a consonant, use 이에요 (ieyo). If it ends in a vowel, use 예요 (yeyo).
For example, if your name is Kevin (케빈), which ends with the consonant ㄴ:
제 이름은 케빈이에요.
je ireumeun Kevin-ieyo
→ My name is Kevin.
If your name is Julia (줄리아), which ends with the vowel ㅏ:
제 이름은 줄리아예요.
je ireumeun Julia-yeyo
→ My name is Julia.
어디에서 왔어요?
eodieseo wasseoyo?
→ Where are you from?
(1) 저는 [country]에서 왔어요
= “I’m from [country]”
Examples:
저는 미국에서 왔어요.
jeoneun miguk-eseo wasseoyo
→ I’m from the U.S.
저는 일본에서 왔어요.
jeoneun ilbon-eseo wasseoyo
→ I’m from Japan.
저는 프랑스에서 왔어요.
jeoneun peurangseu-eseo wasseoyo
→ I’m from France.
(2) 저는 … 사람이에요.
jeoneun … saram-ieyo.
→ I’m … (nationality).
To say your nationality, simply use:
[Country name] + 사람 (saram)
Examples:
저는 프랑스 사람이에요.
jeoneun peurangseu saram-ieyo
→ I’m French.
저는 벨기에 사람이에요.
jeoneun Belgique saram-ieyo
→ I’m Belgian.
저는 스위스 사람이에요.
jeoneun Suisse saram-ieyo
→ I’m Swiss.
저는 캐나다 사람이에요.
jeoneun Canada saram-ieyo
→ I’m Canadian.
직업은 뭐예요?
jigeobeun mwoyeyo?
→ What’s your job?
저는 ...이에요 / 예요.
jeoneun ...ieyo / yeyo.
→ I’m a …
If your job ends with a consonant, use 이에요 (ieyo).
If it ends with a vowel, use 예요 (yeyo).
Examples:
저는 경찰이에요.
jeoneun gyeongchal-ieyo
→ I’m a police officer.
저는 간호사예요.
jeoneun ganhosa-yeyo
→ I’m a nurse.
And if you’re still in school:
저는 학생이에요.
jeoneun haksaeng-ieyo
→ I’m a student.
