Korean Lessons ᚛ Level 5 - Intermediate Korean #2 (Lessons 121 to 150) ᚛ Lesson 134 - It would be nice if in Korean [-(으)면 좋겠다]
You already have all the keys in hand to express the fact of hoping for something in Korean, by combining:
Indeed, the verb "to hope" can actually be expressed this way: "If that happened, it would be nice". This is exactly how we are going to translate it into Korean:
[Present / past stem](으)면 좋겠다
In this structure, the stem can be expressed in the present or in the past without changing the meaning of the sentence. Using the past can allow you to put a slight emphasis on what is hoped for.
Note that in English too, the use of a past tense in this kind of expression is very common ("It would be nice if we went home now").
이제 집에 갔으면 좋겠어.
→ It would be nice if we went home now.
빨리 날씬해졌으면 좋겠다.
→ I hope I get slim quickly.
내일은 비가 안 오면 좋겠네요.
→ Oh, I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow.
하늘을 자유롭게 나는 새가 되면 좋겠다.
→ It would be nice to be a bird flying freely in the sky.
너를 한 번만 다시 볼 수 있으면 좋겠어.
→ I hope I can see you again just once.
오늘은 오래 기다리지 않았으면 좋겠네요.
→ Oh, I hope we won’t wait long today.
