Expressions of routes and journeys in Korean [-는 길] [(으)로 해서]

In this course: 는 길에 / 는 길이다 / 로 해서 / 으로 해서

Expressing a journey

In Korean, to express the fact that we are on the way toward a destination, the following expression can be used:
[Action verb present adjectival form] 길

The adjectival form was seen in the lesson on adjectives in Korean.

From this expression, two sentence structures are commonly used:

  • being on the way to a place
  • doing an action during the journey to a place

Going toward a place

To express the idea of being on the way to a place, it is common to use the following expression:
[Action verb present adjectival form] 길이다

민지의 집 가는 길이에요.
→ I’m on my way to Minji’s house.

일을 마치고 집에 돌아가는 길이에요.
→ I’ve finished work and I’m on my way back home.

마트 다녀오는 길이야.
→ I’m on my way back from the supermarket.

어디 가는 길이에요?
→ Where are you headed?

Doing an action during a journey

To express the fact that we do an action while we are in the middle of a journey, the following sentence structure can be used:
[Action verb present adjectival form] 길에 [Action]

집으로 돌아오는 길에 우체국에 들렀어요.
→ I stopped by the post office on my way home.

오는 길에 차가 고장나서 늦었습니다.
→ I’m late because my car broke down on the way here.

학교 가는 길에 지갑을 도둑맞았어요.
→ My wallet was stolen on the way to school.

지나가는 길에 잠시 얼굴 보려고 들렀어.
→ I was passing by, so I stopped in for a moment to see you.
