Korean Lessons ᚛ Level 7 - Upper-Intermediate Korean #2 (Lessons 181 to 210) ᚛ Lesson 205 - The particle of addition and location in Korean [에다(가)]
You know the particle 에 for the place where something is put, placed or sent: 책상 위에 놓다, 냉장고에 넣다. The particle 에다(가) is a reinforced form of this 에: it stresses the precise spot where the object is placed, "right there, in, on". By extension, [Noun] 에다가 [Noun] is also used to add one element to another: "on top of".
With a verb of placing, contact or sending (놓다, 넣다, 두다, 쓰다, 걸다, 붙이다, 전화하다…), 에다가 replaces 에 and draws attention to the destination:
[Place or surface]에다(가) [Object]을/를 [Verb of placing]
The short form 에다 is possible, but 에다가 is the most frequent in speech. It is always a static place where something is put, never a place of existence (있다) nor a destination of movement (가다): 학교에 가요, not 학교에다가 가요.
