Korean Lessons ᚛ Level 7 - Upper-Intermediate Korean #2 (Lessons 181 to 210) ᚛ Lesson 200 - Even if in Korean #2 [-더라도] [-(ㄴ/는)다고 하더라도]
In the lesson on "even if", we saw the -아/어도 structure, which expresses a concession in a neutral way. Korean has a second structure, -더라도, which presents the concession as a hypothesis pushed to its limit: "even if", "no matter if", "even supposing that". We will first look at -더라도, then at its form reinforced by indirect speech, -(ㄴ/는)다고 하더라도, and finally at what distinguishes these forms from -아/어도.
The -더라도 structure is used in the following manner:
[Present / past stem]더라도
You will recognize the 더 of the -더니 and -던 structures: it presents the situation of the first part as imagined, often unlikely or extreme. The second part then expresses what will remain true regardless: a decision, an intention, a judgment. This is why -더라도 is so often accompanied by 아무리 ("no matter how") in the first part, and by 절대, 꼭 or 여전히 in the second.
