Korean Lessons ᚛ Level 7 - Upper-Intermediate Korean #2 (Lessons 181 to 210) ᚛ Lesson 208 - To someone, casual in Korean [더러] [보고]

To someone, casual in Korean [더러] [보고]

In this course: 더러 / 보고 / 나더러 / 나보고 / 저더러 / 저보고

You know 에게 and 한테 to mark the person to whom one gives, says or asks something. In casual speech, two other particles play this role when reporting what someone said to someone: 더러 and 보고, "to (someone)". They are found mostly with indirect speech, to report an order, a request or a suggestion: 나더러 … 하라고 했어요, "he told me to…".

Telling someone to with 더러

더러 attaches directly to the noun of the person being addressed:
[Person]더러 [What is said to them: … -(으)라고 / -자고 / -냐고 하다]

The final verb is almost always a verb of speech: 하다, 말하다, 시키다, 제안하다, 권하다, 칭찬하다, 야단치다. Unlike 에게 and 한테, 더러 is not used with 주다 or verbs of giving: one does not say 친구더러 선물을 줬어요. The register is casual and spoken; in careful writing, 에게 is used instead.

   I completed this course

Podcasts in Korean specially designed for beginners, to learn Korean by really listening to it from the very beginning.

You’re starting to learn Korean (or you already know the basics), but as soon as you listen to spoken Korean, everything suddenly feels too fast?
The words blend together, the pronunciation escapes you, and you feel like “real Korean” is very different from what you learned in textbooks.

That’s normal!
Listening comprehension is the most difficult part for all beginners.
