Korean LessonsLevel 2 - Korean for Beginners #1 (Lessons 31 to 60) ᚛ Lesson 52 - "With" in Korean

"With" in Korean

In this course: 와 / 과 / 랑 / 이랑 / 하고

Expressing the idea of "with" is simple in Korean. For that, we use the same particles used to express the link "and" between nouns, that is 하고, 와 / 과, and (이)랑.

Note, however, that 하고, 와 / 과 and (이)랑 are used to express "with" in the sense of accompaniment, being accompanied by a person or object.

This should be differentiated from the "with" of the means of doing something, which uses the particle (으)로, as we saw in the previous chapter.

친구하고 학교에 가요.
→ I'm going to school with a friend.

지유 드라마를 보고 있어.
→ I'm watching a drama with Jiyu.

지난 주말에 가족이랑 시간을 보냈어.
→ I spent time with my family last weekend.

지민이는 동료 싸웠습니다.
→ Jimin had a fight with a colleague.

It's very common to use the words 같이 and 함께 (= together) to reinforce the idea of doing something with someone.

하고 같이 갈 수 있어?
→ Can you go there with me (together)?

우리는 그들 함께 운동했어.
→ We exercised with them (together).

Traveling to South Korea can be an unforgettable experience. But when you don’t speak Korean, everything gets more complicated: ordering in a restaurant or café becomes stressful, you can’t understand signs or directions, asking for help in case of trouble is nearly impossible, and most importantly, you miss out on the very essence of a successful trip to Korea: connecting with the locals.

Since English - Korean machine translators can’t always be trusted (the two languages work in completely different ways), it’s essential to prepare yourself in advance to fully enjoy your trip to South Korea!
