Korean Lessons ᚛ Level 6 - Upper-Intermediate Korean #1 (Lessons 151 to 180) ᚛ Lesson 156 - So that, in such a way that #2 [게] [게끔]

So that, in such a way that #2 [게] [게끔]

In this course: 게 / 게끔

We have just studied the -도록 structure. Here, we are going to see the -게 and -게끔 forms, which, although close to it, carry a different nuance.

Expressing purpose with -게

In a previous chapter, we already saw that the -게 structure could be attached to descriptive verbs in order to create adverbs in Korean. -게 can also be attached to an action verb in order to express the purpose of an action, in the following manner:
[Purpose: … Stem]게 [Action]

이따 우리 집에서 저녁 먹게 시장에 장보러 같이 가자.
→ Let’s go to the market together to do the shopping so that we can have dinner at my place later.

한 달간 이 구역은 공사 중이라서 차가 다니지 못하게 도로를 통제했습니다.
→ Since this area was under construction for a month, they closed off the road so that cars could not get through.

여보, 오늘 아파트 계약을 하게 부동산에 도장을 가지고 오시겠어요?
→ Honey, could you bring your seal to the real estate agency so that we can sign the lease for the apartment today?

달걀을 안 깨지게 삶으려면 식초와 소금을 조금 넣고 삶으면 돼.
→ If you want to boil eggs so that they don’t crack, you can add a little vinegar and salt before boiling them.

도서관에서는 다른 사람들이 공부할 수 있게 좀 조용히 하세요.
→ In the library, please keep quiet so that other people can study.

Podcasts in Korean specially designed for beginners, to learn Korean by really listening to it from the very beginning.

You’re starting to learn Korean (or you already know the basics), but as soon as you listen to spoken Korean, everything suddenly feels too fast?
The words blend together, the pronunciation escapes you, and you feel like “real Korean” is very different from what you learned in textbooks.

That’s normal!
Listening comprehension is the most difficult part for all beginners.
