Korean Lessons ᚛ Level 6 - Upper-Intermediate Korean #1 (Lessons 151 to 180) ᚛ Lesson 173 - Supposition, intention and cause in Korean [-(으)ㄹ 테니까]
In the previous lesson, we studied the -(으)ㄹ 텐데 structure, built on the form 테다, which can be used to express supposition or intention.
By combining 테다 with the cause structure -(으)니까, we obtain the form 테니까.
테니까 allows us to make a supposition or state an intention as a cause in the first part of the sentence, and then to give an order or a consequence in the second part of the sentence, just like the -(으)니까 structure. It is used in the following manner:
[Action 1: ... Modifier -(으)ㄹ] 테니까 [Action 2]
Compared to the simple -(으)니까 structure, the -(으)ㄹ 테니까 structure can add the idea that we strongly suppose that the cause is taking place in the present or future (present stem), or took place in the past (past stem).
