Between, among in Korean [중에] [사이에]
Between with 중에 and 중에서
In a previous lesson, we studied the word 중 to express being in the middle of an action. However, it has another meaning when it is accompanied by 에 or 에서.
중에 is an expression that is placed after a noun to express the idea of a choice between several elements of the same group. In English, we generally translate it as "among" or "between". It is used in the following manner:
[Noun] 중에
Note that it is also possible to use 중에서 instead of 중에 without any change in meaning.
Moreover, 중에 is often used with the superlative in Korean with the help of words like 가장 or 제일.
과일 중에 포도가 가장 좋아.
→ Among fruits, grapes are my favorite.
과목 중에 영어가 제일 어려워.
→ Among the subjects, English is the hardest.
친구 중에 민지랑 가장 친합니다.
→ Among my friends, I am closest to Minji.
한국에서 가 본 데 중에서 어디가 제일 좋았어요?
→ Among the places you have been to in Korea, which one did you like best?
민지는 많은 사람들 중에 멀리 있는 남자친구를 한눈에 알아볼 수 있었습니다.
→ Minji was able to recognize her boyfriend from afar at a glance among many people.
오늘은 네 생일이니까 이 중에서 골라. 네가 원하는 거 오늘 하루 동안은 다 들어줄게.
→ Since it’s your birthday today, pick from among these. I'll give you everything you want for the whole day today.
- 체크인 도와드릴까요?
- 네, 2박 하려고 하는데 남은 방 중에서 바다가 보이는 방으로 주시겠어요?
→ - May I help you check in?
- Yes, I’m planning to stay two nights. Among the remaining rooms, could you give me one with a sea view?
