Korean Lessons ᚛ Level 6 - Upper-Intermediate Korean #1 (Lessons 151 to 180) ᚛ Lesson 159 - The result through effort in Korean [-(으)ㄴ 끝에]

The result through effort in Korean [-(으)ㄴ 끝에]

In this course: 끝에 / ㄴ 끝에 / 은 끝에

The result with -(으)ㄴ 끝에

In the previous chapter, we saw that we can express the result of an action thanks to the -(으)ㄴ 결과 form. There is another way to express the result of an action when that result was hard to obtain and required time or effort. For this, we use the following structure:
[Action: … Past adjectival form] 끝에 [Result]

In English, the -(으)ㄴ 끝에 structure can be translated with expressions such as "finally", "at last", "after" or any other turn of phrase showing a result obtained through effort.

3시간 동안 걸은 끝에 드디어 설악산 정상에 도착했어.
→ After walking for 3 hours, we finally reached the top of Seoraksan.

그들은 오래 고민한 끝에 결혼식 날짜와 신혼여행지를 정했습니다.
→ After deliberating for a long time, they settled on a wedding date and a honeymoon destination.

2시간 동안 토론한 끝에 재현이를 설득할 수 있었어요.
→ After debating for 2 hours, I was finally able to convince Jaehyun.

오랜 재활 치료를 받은 끝에 다시 걸을 수 있게 됐다.
→ After a long period of rehabilitation treatment, he was finally able to walk again.

1년 동안 금주한 끝에 건강해지고 살도 빠졌어요.
→ After 1 year without drinking alcohol, he became healthier and lost weight as well.

대화를 많이 나눈 끝에 헤어지기로 했어.
→ After talking things over at length, we finally decided to break up.

Traveling to South Korea can be an unforgettable experience. But when you don’t speak Korean, everything gets more complicated: ordering in a restaurant or café becomes stressful, you can’t understand signs or directions, asking for help in case of trouble is nearly impossible, and most importantly, you miss out on the very essence of a successful trip to Korea: connecting with the locals.

Since English - Korean machine translators can’t always be trusted (the two languages work in completely different ways), it’s essential to prepare yourself in advance to fully enjoy your trip to South Korea!
