Necessity in Korean, only if [-아/어야]

In this course: 아야 / 어야 / 해야 / 여야 / 라야 / 이어야 / 이라야

In a previous chapter, we studied the -아/어야 되다 and -아/어야 하다 structures, which allow us to express having to do something and the obligation to carry out an action. These two structures actually belong to a larger family that we are going to study in this chapter.

Expressing necessity

General case

In Korean, it is possible to express the fact that an action must be carried out so that another action happens, with the following structure:
[Verb conjugated to the present tense casual style]야 [Action]

In English, this structure is generally translated with "only if", "have to ... in order to" or "need to ... for". Indeed, we explicitly indicate that the first action has to be carried out so that the second one can happen as well.
