To have to do - -아/어야 되다

In Korean, the idea of "having to do" is expressed with the help of the verb 되다, which we already saw in the chapter on permission in Korean. To say that one must perform an action in Korean, we use the following structure:
[Verb conjugated to the present tense casual style]야 되다

저는 일을 많이 해야 됐어요.
→ I had to do a lot of work.

한국에 살고 싶어서 한국어를 배워야 돼요.
→ Because I want to live in Korea, I have to learn Korean.

저는 내일 일찍 일어나야 되니까 지금 자야 돼요.
→ Because I need to get up early tomorrow, I should sleep now.

오늘은 친구를 만나야 돼.
→ Today I have to see a friend.

9시까지는 와야 돼.
→ You have to come before 9:00. (Lit: Until 9:00, you must come.)

장마 기간에는 항상 우산을 가지고 다녀야 돼.
→ During monsoon season, you must always carry an umbrella. (Lit: During monsoon season, you must always possess an umbrella and go.)

어제까지 작품을 완성해야 됐어요.
→ I had to finish my work before yesterday.
