Comparison in Korean [보다]

In this course: 보다

Compare in Korean

The particle 보다 is used to compare two elements to be able to use expressions such as "more … than" or "less … than" in sentences like "I'm taller than you." or "Bananas are less expensive than apples."

The particle 보다 is placed just after the element is compared. In English, it could literally be translated as "in comparison to".

To construct comparative phrases, we need the two following words:

  • (= more)
  • (= less)

겨울은 여름보다 추워요.
→ The winter is colder than the summer. (Lit. Winter, in comparison to summer, is colder.)

바나나는 사과보다 비싸요.
→ Bananas are less expensive than apples. (Lit. Bananas, in comparison to apples, are less expensive.)

나는 고양이보다 강아지를 좋아해.
→ I prefer dogs over cats. (Lit: I like dogs more than cats.)

보라 씨는 파란색보다 분홍색이 잘 어울려요.
→ Pink looks better on Bora than blue does.

내 신발보다 민지 신발이 커요.
→ Minji's shoes are bigger than mine.
