So that, so as to in Korean #1 [도록]

In this course: 도록

In previous chapters, we have seen many ways to express purpose in Korean with structures such as -(으)려고 and -(으)러, -(으)려면 or -기 위해. In this chapter and the following ones, we are going to learn how to use the grammatical structures -도록 and -게, which also allow us to express purpose but have their own nuances.

Purpose with -도록

In Korean, it is possible to express that an action is carried out so that another action happens by using -도록 in the following manner:
[Purpose: … Stem]도록 [Action]

In English, the -도록 structure can generally be translated by expressions such as "so as to", "so that" or "in order that".
