Korean Lessons ᚛ Level 6 - Upper-Intermediate Korean #1 (Lessons 151 to 180) ᚛ Lesson 161 - Cause linked to a noun in Korean [-(으)로 인해(서)]

Cause linked to a noun in Korean [-(으)로 인해(서)]

In this course: 로 인해 / 로 인해서 / 으로 인해 / 으로 인해서

We have already seen multiple ways of expressing cause and effect in Korean, such as the -아/어서 structure, the -(으)니까 structure, or words such as 때문 and 덕분.

In this lesson, we are going to see a form that allows us to express a cause linked to a noun: (으)로 인해(서).

The nominal cause with (으)로 인해(서)

One of the first particles we studied is the particle of means (으)로. On its own, it allows us to express the means used to carry out an action. Combined with 인해(서), it allows us to indicate that the noun is the cause of a consequence. It is used in the following manner:
[Cause: … Noun](으)로 인해(서) [Consequence]

  • If the noun phrase ends with a vowel or with ㄹ: [Noun]로 인해(서)
  • If the noun phrase ends with a consonant: [Noun]으로 인해(서)

The (으)로 인해(서) structure can mark a positive cause as well as a negative one. In English, it is generally translated by expressions such as "due to", "because of" or "thanks to".

Podcasts in Korean specially designed for beginners, to learn Korean by really listening to it from the very beginning.

You’re starting to learn Korean (or you already know the basics), but as soon as you listen to spoken Korean, everything suddenly feels too fast?
The words blend together, the pronunciation escapes you, and you feel like “real Korean” is very different from what you learned in textbooks.

That’s normal!
Listening comprehension is the most difficult part for all beginners.
